baking class success!

The hot cross bun baking class was a success! It was a fun gathering of old and new friends, who have a shared passion for baking. Everyone enjoyed getting their hands in the dough (who doesn't like mixing up dough, it reminds me of playing with play dough or mud pies as a kid) and preparing this special Easter treat.

Hot Cross Buns Class

The group had a great time sharing stories about different hot cross bun recipes, baking, and Easter. One of the ladies in the class is from England, and she described the traditional English bun, which is more like a spiced bread roll. The cross is made using a paste of flour and water. Until recently in the UK, there were laws prohibiting selling hot cross buns until Good Friday. The recipe that I shared differing in that it is a brioche dough, and the cross is a spiced frosting. Now, hot cross buns are sold any time of the year and have as many variations as your imagination can conceive.

We talked about baking as a meditative practice, getting immersed in the process. The concept of meraki, which is a Greek word that translates as doing something with soul, creativity, or love, when you put something of yourself into what you're doing. Baking with meraki and the joy in sharing the treats with friends and family.  Yes, the hot cross bun class was a success!
